How to strengthen immunity during the epidemic? ~ A personal post from Dr. Henry Chu’s Facebook

2021-6-1

Since mid-May, when there was a big break of Covid-19 in Taiwan, I have been asked by many clients, relatives and friends every day what to do when the epidemic gets worse.

I think we all understand the fact that the virus will never go away. In the short term, we may put our hopes on the vaccine, but it is worth thinking about, can we only wait for the vaccine passively all the time? Or, when different viruses appear at the same time, do we have to get different vaccines at the same time? Or, if the vaccine is only effective for a certain period of time and not for life, should we keep getting it regularly? Or even if it has become like the flu and people have to take the vaccine seasonally? It's just a never-ending war between human and virus...

In conclusion, I believe that the ultimate fundamental defense against viruses and infectious diseases of any kind is to regulate the immune system! Regulate immunity! Regulate immunity! (I have to say it three times because it's important!)

What is Immunity? Please note! Immunity is not the stronger the better! The immune system needs to be balanced! Because our immune system is composed of various immune cells, each with a different task, each cell needs to be complementarily activated to regulate the body's immune function to resist foreign invasion. If any cell function is too strong or too weak, it will cause imbalance in the immune system. For example, an over-strong immune system can cause allergies or autoimmune diseases such as desiccation, psoriasis, rigid spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, lupus erythematosus, etc. An over-weak immune system makes the body susceptible to bacterial or viral attacks, which may lead to the growth of cancer cells in the long term.

A balanced immune system can effectively defend against external viruses or bacteria, prevent the transformation of mutated cells into cancer cells, and remove aging cells to prevent the onset of aging. Even if a virus does invade, the symptoms will be mild and can be healed quickly.

How do we know if our immune system is balanced? We don’t evaluate the immune system by feelings! Recently there is a complete immune cell test that is as simple as a health check. Just by drawing blood, we can find out the number, proportion, distribution, and virulence of each type of immune cell population. Based on the data, the professional physician then analyzes and evaluates the current physical condition and the risk of future infections, cancer or autoimmune diseases, and recommends the areas of the immune system that need to be strengthened and the appropriate direction of adjustment, in order to remedy the situation.

Here comes the kicker! Most people ask me how to strengthen the immune system. Medical science has proven that immunity can be regulated through both daily life and medicine.

The most important things in daily life as follows:

[Balanced diet]
The choice of food should be balanced. Increase your intake of vitamins C, D and B complex. Many fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, such as lemons and guavas. And more sun exposure allows the body to synthesize vitamin D. If you are afraid of not taking enough vitamins from food, you can also supplement from healthy foods. You can now buy vitamin drops for children and so on. Onion, ginger, garlic, turmeric (curry), chili pepper, etc. are all good natural ingredients to maintain immunity. Many people use expensive herbs such as propolis, Cordyceps, Lingzhi and Ganoderma, which can also achieve the same purpose.

[moderate exercise]
Exercise will increase muscle strength, immunity and fitness. As long as it does not cause sports injuries, everyone can find their own favorite or suitable sports, such as swimming, brisk walking, yoga, aerobics, etc., to make the body healthier.

[Sufficient sleep]
Adequate sleep is important! Medical literature has confirmed that immunity decreases if you don't get enough sleep, so it is necessary to get enough sleep and choose the right amount of sleep every day. Don't stay up late! Sleep quality from 11:00 pm to 4:00 am is especially crucial. We can find that, with the same 8-hour sleep, people on day shift and night shift physical condition is much different!

[Appropriate Stress Relief]
Relieving stress and maintaining an optimistic mood is an extremely important part of regulating immunity. Generally speaking, people who are stressed are usually not in good shape, and their immunity is reduced, resulting in many diseases. When I was at Chang Gung Hospital, I found that some cancer patients prolonged their survival for several years because they maintained a positive and optimistic attitude and persisted in their treatment.

[Good Habits]
Do not smoke or eat betel nut, avoid exposure to heavy metals and environmental hormones, maintain a good lifestyle, and keep a normal work schedule. Apart from self-adjustment in daily life, what can medical science help? Recent studies have confirmed that normal functioning immune cells have the potential to treat diseases. In addition to the use of immune cells in cancer treatment, regular blood sampling and transfusion of immune cells to enhance and maintain the balance of the immune system has been a regular maintenance practice in many advanced countries for high-end and medical professionals. This way of stimulating and strengthening the immune system through autoimmune cells is clinically positive in fighting against viruses, preventing cancer, anti-aging, or as a complementary treatment after cancer.

I believe that, in addition to wearing a mask, washing hands regularly, understanding your immune status through immune cell test, adjusting your daily habits, and seeking professional help when necessary, your immune system will reach an ideal state of balance.
